Conflict/Resolution
There are two main conflicts in the book Leviathan. The first conflict is when Deryn is trying to impersonate a boy so she can join the air force. She changes her name to Dylan and cuts her hair short to look more like a boy. During the early nineteen hundreds, a girl fighting in a war was strictly forbidden. If anyone had found out that Deryn was a girl, she would be sent back to Britain or even hanged for treason. There are also a few times in the story where she forgets to act like a boy and almost gives herself away. For example, ““Deryn winced as she heard her voice squeak like a girl’s. She lowered it and said,“End message.”” (pg 419) This squeak of her voice could have raised suspicion that she was a girl. Luckily none of the officers thought to question it and her secret stayed safe.

The second conflict in the book is Alek trying to escape the Germans. As they are fleeing to Switzerland, they stop in a town for parts and they are recognized by a shopkeeper. They scramble back to their stormwalker to avoid being captured by the German forces. Thankfully Alek makes it back to the stormwalker and escapes capture. Unfortunately, the German forces try tocapture them again when they try to cross the Austrian-Switzerland border. They nearly get blown up but they make it into Switzerland. After arriving to their safe house in Switzerland, Alek runs into Deryn and the rest of the Leviathan’s crew. Consequently, Alek is attacked again while the Germans are attacking the Leviathan. The ship and Alek both escape and the ship continues to fly toward Istanbul.
