Summary
Leviathan is a science fiction novel set in Europe in approximately 1914. The story explains both Deryn and Alek’s view of the current situation. On Deryn’s side of the story, she has just joined the air service and is being trained. She is in a Huxley, which is like a hot air balloon but it is a creature that creates its own hydrogen to fly. A storm comes along and she forced to cut her life line and floats freely in the sky. She is later rescued by the Leviathan on which she completes her training. Shortly after completing her training the ship is attacked by German planes. The ship is badly damaged and crashes in Switzerland. Alek side of the story starts at his home in Austria. His royal parents have just been assassinated and now he is being chased by German forces. So Alek, Count Volger, and Master Klopp are in a stormwalker trying to escape to the neutral country of Switzerland. While on their way to
Switzerland, they stop in a town for fuel and parts and a shopkeeper recognizes them. They scramble back to the stormwalker before the Germans capture them. After escaping the German forces, they proceed to the Austrian-Switzerland border only to find the border guarded by a walker frigate. A walker frigate is like a stormwalker but it is much bigger. After narrowly escaping the frigate they make their way through to Switzerland and arrive at their safe house. Not long after arriving at the safe house, the Leviathan crashes a mile from their location. Feeling guilty for not helping them, Alek brings them medical supplies and is captured by the Leviathan’screw and questioned. In the end, the Leviathan escapes and continues its journey to Istanbul along Alek and the stormwalker’s crew. |
